Louis Fortier plays with re-evaluating his identity in an attempt to translate accidents of everyday life and the transience of our existence. In Larrons en foire, two grimacing heads meet in unintentional complementarity. These clownish avatars fall within a seemingly endless genealogical suite of deformed and twisted faces, all modelled after the artist’s head. The heads had undergone a moulding process, underlining the unpredictable behaviour of the material when heated.
Working mainly in sculpture for nearly 20 years, Louis Fortier holds a Master’s in Visual Arts from UQAM. He uses his own head as the basis for his explorations on identity and time. Fortier’s work has been the subject of several solo and group m>La tête au ventre, at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery (Montreal), and in C’est arrivé près de chez vous. L’art actuel à Québec, at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in 2009, and in Art Amsterdam 2011. His work was the subject of an episode of Vente de garage, broadcast on ARTV in 2010. His works are part of the permanent collection of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and various other collections (Prêt d’œuvres d’art, Loto-Québec, la Peau de l’Ours, and Aldo Group).
